The facts

What to know before adopting a dog from A.C.E./SHIN.
-Dogs need time to grow familiar with their new home. It will take at least a month before they will understand what is expected of them. Some dogs, for example dogs who have always been chained outside and been on their own, have to learn how to behave inside a house. Most of these dogs are fast learners and nothing will give them more joy then to please their new owner.

- Every dog has his own personality and A.C.E./SHIN will try to give a correct description of the dogs character before the adoption. Some dogs are very timid. Although many dogs have been abused this is not always the cause of their reserved behavior. They can also be homesick or had a hard life when they had to survive on their own in the streets.
However, with love and patience, but above all with understanding about their past, a lot can be achieved but it will take time. Only after discovering and analyzing the dogs’ rucksack you can grow together and friendship for life will blossom. Every dog is a friend but friendship has to grow and with some of our street dogs this will take a bit more time and effort. This you need to realize and be prepared to work with, only then you can be sure of a successful adoption.
However, love is always the best remedy and with plenty of love even the most timid dog will blossom and enjoy his new life.

- The expression: “You can’t judge a book by its cover” is also true for our dogs. Most of the dogs are of mixed breed. You shouldn’t be surprised if a dog looks like a certain breed but behaves like a totally different breed.

- Some dogs will suffer from diarrhea the first few days after their arrival. This is seldom a sign of illness, but mostly caused by a change in food. Once the dog is used to eating a certain type of food it is best to stick to it but if change is necessary then change the food bit by bit. At A.C.E./SHIN the dogs are used to eating dog biscuits.

- We are often asked if the dog is house-trained. This will differ per dog. Some are house-trained at once, with others it will take a bit longer. A dog could have been house-trained but lost the skill during his life on the street or at the shelter. It is important for you to realize that the dog has to learn where and when he has to relieve himself and how often he gets the chance to do so.

- A.C.E./SHIN advices everyone after they have adopted a dog, to give this dog time to get used to the new situation and especially not to make LONG WALKS, but to build this up slowly. The dogs have often lived in a kennel for a long time and need time to build up their muscles.
When long walks are made too soon the dogs may suffer from various problems,
so: START WITH SHORT WALKS AND EXTEND SLOWLY.
